Campus Evacuation Procedures

  • In the event of a building alarm or oral notification, evacuate the building at the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
  • Do not panic– remain calm. Follow emergency personnel and/or USF Security instructions.
  • Secure any hazardous materials or equipment before leaving.
  • Close all doors behind you. Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
  • Faculty should clear their classrooms and close the door.
  • Do not run and do not use elevators.
  • Follow directions given by emergency personnel and/or USF Security.
  • Gather 500 feet from the building unless otherwise instructed by emergency personnel and/or USF Security.
  • If it is safe for you to assist persons with disabilities or special needs, do so. If you are unable to assist, notify emergency responders of the location and number of disabled or special needs persons located in your area.
  • Faculty must account for all students and remain together, if possible. Immediately report any missing students to a USF Security officer or an emergency responder on scene.
  • Wait to be contacted. Do not return to the building or move to another side of the building unless told to do so by emergency personnel
  • Activate a pull station to alert all other occupants (red device located near the exit stair). To operate: pull the black level down.
  • Evacuate the area and close all doors behind you. Call out to persons in adjacent offices, classrooms, and restrooms to evacuate the floor.
  • Do not open doors that feel warm to the touch. If there is heat or smoke in the area, crawl low to the floor to the nearest exit.
  • Notify the University Safety and Security Department if conditions permit.
  • Used to get students, faculty and staff out of the building through the nearest exit.
  • ALL students, faculty and staff MUST evacuate the building.
  • Used to get students, faculty and staff out of the building by a route designed to avoid contact with a potential threat.
  • This type of evacuation will be coordinated by first responders.
  • Used to get students, faculty and staff off the University of St. Francis campus due to a severe emergency in the area.
  • Follow directives of emergency personnel (where applicable).
  • Drive with caution and courtesy and follow directions.
  • Do not block the way for other vehicles.
  • If the road is not usable, leave your vehicle and evacuate on foot.
  • If on foot, leave by a main exit and proceed to a safe location, as directed.
  • Always make sure you report any disability to Safety & Security, the school nurse, or the Academic Resource Center.
  • In your dorm room: wait in your room with the door shut for emergency responders to assist you safely out of the building.
  • In a classroom: follow the signs to designated safe spaces on your floor and wait for assistance from an emergency responder.
